What keeps me grounded (or sane)

What keeps me grounded (or sane)

We just planned our much needed first real vacation in almost 3 years and I honestly cannot wait to leave the country, take a break from our routines, and be stimulated by new surroundings.

But the truth is that daily nurturing habits can have an even greater impact on our well-being than a vacation that's taken once in a while.

So, what's non-negotiable for me when it comes to staying sane?  My daily yoga practice. I keep coming back to it no matter what because it helps anchor me.  Merely showing up on my mat for 5 simple sun salutation feels gratifying.  I need that morning stretch of the back body and those full and loving morning breaths.  I used to feel like if I don't have a full hour I didn't really do yoga.  And yes, while it would be nice to have the full hour, I still feel a sense of satisfaction because I deliberately choose to do this because of how much I need it to feel well.

Consider --

  • What practices or rituals did you stop doing because life got in the way?
  • What have you been yearning to take up that you know will bring you a greater sense of wellness and satisfaction in your life?
  • What is non-negotiable for you when it comes to supporting your health and well-being?

It's time to get back to yourself.  The sun is shining, the warm air is kissing your skin, and nature is in full bloom.  It's time for you to take charge of you, too.

Pick one thing, and make a commitment.  It doesn't have to be grand or time consuming.  Answer the questions above and just go for it.  Nothing to lose.  Now is the perfect time.

Here are some ideas for things you can do on the daily that can help ground you and give you the TLC you need:

+ a 10 minute morning run
+ a 10 minute meditation
+ a 10 minute practice on an instrument you're learning
+ a walk outdoors midday
+ a morning mantra or an evening mantra
+ daily gratitude practice right before you go to bed
+ a breakfast smoothie

One thing to remember is that when it comes to our mental and physical well-being, daily practice of whatever nourishes our soul, is critical. I feel this more than ever now as a working mom.

Remember, if you skip a day, don't beat yourself up over it and don't feel like you are starting over the next day.  Show yourself compassion and just stay the course.
